Learning II Flashcards
How are visually guided decisions made?
represented visual information in V1 is decoded by decision making networks
Does perceptual learning change the representation in visual cortex or read out by decision making brain areas?
perceptual learning specificity could indicate that visual info is read out to form decisions, but does not mean that the representation of learned stimuli in V1 is changed.
How could perceptual learning change the representation of visual information in V1?
changes to individual neurones from perceptual learning could alter the representation of stimuli in v1.
Does perceptual learning change the neuronal representation of visual stimuli in cortical visual hierarchy?
Learning does change the responses, tuning and correlated responses of neurones at intermediate levels of the cortical visual hierarchy. These are insufficient to explain behavioural changes from perceptual learning.
Does perceptual learning change the ‘read-out’ of visual information?
Law and Gold (2018) found that PL changes readout but not representation of visual information in monkeys.
How does learning on a new task affect the neural substrates of previously learned tasks?
Chowdhury and DeAngelis (2009) used 3 tasks to examine effects of fine discrimination training on coarse depth discrimination: direction discrimination, coarse depth discrimination & fine depth discrimination. Found that substantive alterations to the read-out are sufficient to explain changes to the perception of visual motion.
Does perceptual learning change the tuning of neurones in visual cortex?
Schoups et al. (2001): learned improvement in monkeys in orientation discrimination performance correlated with small change in slope of orientation curves at trained location.
Does PL change the tuning of neurones in V4 (extrastriate cortex)?
this relatively subtle change in response of neurones in V1 not sufficient to explain amount of learning. (Yang and Maunsell 2004)
