Q

what were the hypotheses?

A

children seeing an aggressive model will be more aggressive than those who see a non-aggressive model or no model at all

children seeing a non-aggressive model are less likely to show aggression than those who see no model

children are more likely to copy a same-sex model

boys are more likely to copy aggression than girls

Q

how were participants mildly annoyed?

A

they were taken to a room with attractive toys (fire trucks and baby crib) and were allowed to play. after two minutes they were told that they aren’t allowed to play with these toys as they were the best toys and were reserved for other children

Q

describe the observation room

A

it had a table and chair which was the child’s ‘play area’. they sat and made potato prints and sticker pictures. on the opposite side of the room there was a table and a chair and this was the model’s area. there was a tinker toy set, a five foot bobo doll and a mallet. the experimenter stayed in the room but appeared to be working at the desk.

Q

what was the aggressive model condition?

A

the model would assemble the tinker toys for one minute then start attacking the bobo doll.

the bobo doll was laid on its side, sat on, punched in the nose, picked up, hit on the head with a mallet, tossed up in the air and kicked

aggressive comments were made like: sock him in the nose, kick him, pow

non aggressive comments were made like: he keeps coming back for more, he sure is a tough fella

this was repeated 3 times for 9 minutes

Q

describe the experimental room

A

the room had aggressive toys like a 3 foot bobo doll, a mallet, a peg board, a tether ball with a face printed on it hanging from the ceiling and 2 dart guns

it had non aggressive toys like a tea set, 2 dolls, 3 bears, trucks, cars, plastic farm animals, crayons and coloring paper

16
Q

what is imitative action and what are examples?

A

behavior identical to the behavior modeled

physical: sitting on bobo doll, punching it in the nose, hitting it with a mallet
verbal: pow, sock him in the nose

non aggressive verbal: he keeps coming back for more, he sure is a tough fella

17
Q

what is partially imitative action and what are examples?

A

behavior similar to behavior modeled

striking toys other than the bobo doll with the mallet or sitting on the bobo doll without attacking it

18
Q

what is non-imitative action and what are examples?

A

behavior that wasn’t demonstrated by the model

physical and verbal aggression towards toys other than the bobo doll and new verbal remarks like ‘cut him’

19
Q

what were the results?

A

children exposed to an aggressive model were significantly more aggressive

children exposed to a non-aggressive model spent twice as much time sitting quietly and not playing

very little difference in aggression shown from children exposed to a non-aggressive model and control group

boys were more likely to show physical aggression and copied a male model (25.8)

girls were more likely to show verbal aggression and copied a male model (7.2) more than female model (5.5)

girls played with tea sets and colored whilst boys played with guns

no gender difference in play with plastic farm animals

20
Q

what were the conclusions?

A

children who saw an aggressive model were more likely to show aggression than those who saw a non-aggressive model or no model

children who saw a non-aggressive model were less likely to show aggression than children who saw no model

children were more likely to imitate a same-sex model

boys are more likely to show aggression than girls
