Q

What is classical conditioning?

A

When a stimulus that elicits a response is paired with another stimulus that initially does not elicit a response on its own. Overtime, the second stimulus causes a similar response.

A

Tendency of stimuli similar to a conditioned stimulus to evoke similar conditioned responses.

Q

What are different ways brands use stimulus generalization?

A

Family branding -> umbrella brand
Product line extensions -> Coca Cola/coke diet
Licensing -> Disney, frozen shampoo
Look-alike packaging-> copycat products

Q

What is stimulus discrimination?

A

Similar stimuli do not evoke similar response

Makes one brand look bad and one even better

Q

What is instrumental conditioning?

A

Individual learn to perform behaviours that produce positive outcomes and avoid those that yield negative outcomes

Q

What is positive reinforcement? Examples?

A

Positive reinforcement is when someone is given something related to their good action. Ei. Study hard = good grades

Q

What is negative reinforcement? Examples?

A

Negative reinforcement is when someone execute a behaviour to avoid something else. Ei. Putting on deodorant to avoid smelling and getting humiliated.

Q

What is extinction?

A

The removal of positive event weakens responses, which are no longer followed by positive outcomes. They learn that behaviour does not lead to previous reward so they stop the behaviour

13
Q

What is punishment?

A

Negative event weakens responses, which are then followed by negative outcomes. Consumer learns not to perform responses leading to punishment

Q

What are the different types of reinforcement schedule? Examples for each?

A

Fixed-interval (seasonal promotion, getting paid)
Variable interval (flash sales, video games)
Fixed ratio (loyalty card)
Variable ratio (gambling, lottery)

Q

What can the skimer rat experiment tell us?

A

Variable ratio are more rewarding and motivating. Joy comes from the inability to predict.

16
Q

What is observational learning?

A

Watching others and note reinforcement they receive whilst doing that behaviour. Ei. Celebrity endorsements (modelling)

17
Q

What is the role of memory in learning?

A

Acquiring information and storing it over time so that it will be available when needed.

18
Q

What is the memory process?

A

External inputs -> encoding -> storage -> retrieval

19
Q

What is nostalgia marketing?

A

When companies use a yearning for a former place or time.

20
Q

When do companies use nostalgic marketing?

A

When things are not doing too well.
