Learning Aim C.2 Flashcards
What is a progressive wave?
where the waveform travels, transferring energy from one position to another.
What is an example of a progressive wave?
ocean waves
What is a stationary wave?
(standing waves) wave motions that store energy rather than transferring energy to other locations.
What is an example of a stationary wave?
sound produced in instruments.
What is a node?
points along a stationary wave where the displacement amplitude is at a minimum ideally 0)
What interference happens at a node?
Destructive interference.
What is an antinode?
points of maximum amplitude that occur halfway between each pair of nodes.
What interference occurs at the antinode?
constructive interference
What is a resonator?
What is resonance?
the storing of energy in an oscillation or a stationary wave, the energy coming from an external source of appropriately matched frequency.
