LEARNING AIM A - UNIT ONE Flashcards
nature vs nurture
nativists believe your development as a result of genetics.
the environmental stance is that development is as a result of nurture (the environment)
continual development
each milestone happens one after another without a stop
staged development
the development happens in stages
what are the variables that effect a child’s development?
environment
culture
parenting style
genetics
what is growth?
Growth is an increase in physical size
what is development?
Development is the acquisition of skills
what key principles about growth need to be considered?
The rate of growth is variable - amongst others
Different body parts can grow at different rates
overall - This means that it is not smooth and predictable
what key principles about development need to be considered?
Follows a definitive, orderly sequence
Development begins with the control of head movement and continues down the body.
Development begins with the larger muscles (gross motor skills) and then becomes refined to the smaller muscles (fine motor skills)
what are some of the factors that effect a child’s growth and development
Heredity
Environment
Gender
Exercise and health
Hormones
Nutrition
Familial growth
Geographical differences
Socio-economic status
Learning and reinforcement
what do we measure in children to check they are healthy and how do we record it?
weight, height , head circumference
on percentile charts
what are the area of development?
cognitive
social
emotional
physical
language
what is physical development split into?
gross motor - these skills are required for movement of whole limbs.
fine motor - the skills needed to coordinate and handle objects - palmer, pincer and tripod grasp
locomotive - these are the skills required to move the body and allow for the ability to balance.
What are neuronal pathways?
They are established routes for signals to travel
When practicing a skill the pathways strengthen so it becomes easier
What are neurons
A type of brain cells
What is myelination?
When the fatty substance myelin forms around the axon.
It helps to speed up time that impulses travel
