What are the five important aspects associated with intellectual development.
- Language development
- Problem solving - Required to work things out and to make predictions about what might happen.
- Memory - Required for storing, recalling and retrieving information.
- Moral development
- Abstract thoughts and creative thinking are essential for thinking and discussing situations and events that cannot be observed.
What are the stages of intellectual development across the life span
A individuals progress their intellectual and cognitive ability increases.
Infancy and early adulthood - Stages of rapid intellectual development
Adolescence to early adulthood - Development of logical thought, problem solving and memory recall skills.
Middle adulthood - Can think through problems and make sound judgements using life experiences
Later adulthood - Changes in the brain can cause short term memory decline and slower thought process.
The stages of language development at 3 months
Make babbling noises as they learn to control the muscles associated with speech

Begin to imitate sounds made by carers
The stages of language development at around 2 years
Make two word sentences, begin to build their vocabulary

Make simple sentences. This develops in to the ability to ask questions.

Use clear sentences that can be understood by strangers. Can be expected to make some mistakes.

Speak using full grammar. Most children can be expected to use language effectively .

- Discuss ideas

Piaget’s stages of cognitive development
Sensorimotor (0-2) - Infants think by interacting with the world using their senses.
Preoperational (2-7) - Development of language and make believe play takes place.
Children have egocentric thinking
Concrete operational (7-11) - Children’s reasoning becomes logical, providing that the issues are concrete. Will be able to answer questions as long as they can see the object or picture
Formal operational (11-18) - Abstract thinking develops. Enables them to think through complicated ideas in their heads with out having to see the concrete image
