What is growth
An increase in a measurable quantity such as weight, height or head circumference
What is development
Complex changes that can’t be measured but instead observed including an increase in skills, knowledge and abilities
What are centile lines
Lines on a graph used to show average measurements of a child’s height, weight and head circumference
Age of infancy
0-2 years
Age of early childhood
3-8 years
Age of adolescence
9-18 years
Age of early adulthood
19-45 years
Age of middle adulthood
45–65
Age of later adulthood
65+
Key features of infancy
- Growing rapidly
- around the age of 1 they will start learning to walk and by age of 2 they can run
Key features of early childhood
Children are still progressing and developing though all aspects of their development
Key features of Adolescence
- Start experiencing growth spurts as puberty begins
- puberty also starts making physical changes like sexual characteristics
Key features of early adulthood
- Reach peak physical fitness
- women’s body may start preparing for pregnancy
- perimenopause starts
- increase in hormones oestrogen and progresterone
- menopause starts where a woman hasn’t had a period for 12 months
Key features of middle adulthood
- ageing process begins with a loss for things like strength or stamina
- physical cahnges may also start to take place e.g. grey hair
Key features of later adulthood
Ageing process continues to take place and health may deteriorate
