Definition of Nursing
- assist the individual sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery
- help him gain independence as rapidly as possible
Nursing Values
- no two individuals are exactly alike
- nursing is committed to humanistic, holistic and evidence-based care given within a safe, ethical, and culturally sensitive framework
- nursing is composed of physiological (biophysical), phychological (emotional), sociocultural (interpersonal), spiritual and environmental- that are interrelated and not separate entities
- focus on relationships rather than authority/power

- structured by codes of ethics and standards that guide nursing practice and protect the public

Standards of Nursing Practice
- standard is a statement or criterion that can be used by a profession ad by the general public to measure quality or practice
- standards of nursing practice make each nurse accountable for their practice
Who developed the standards of nursing practice
The CNO and CNA have developed and implemented standards of practice that identify clearly the nurses’ responsibilities
The CNO’s standards of nursing practice includes
- confidentiality and privacy (personal health information)
- decisions about procedures and authority
- documentation
- ethics
- infection prevention and control
- medication
- professional standards
- restraints
- resuscitation
- therapeutic nurse-client relationship
what is a legal and ethical dilemma
dilemma is a choice between two unpleasant, ethically troubling alternatives
ie. client refusing to take medication
