Learning Flashcards
Craik and Lockhart (1972) levels of processing hypothesis
Depth of processing
determines how well it will be retained in
memory.
* Success determined by type of operation
performed on stimulus at encoding
* Stimuli first processed according to perceptual
features (e.g., visually, acoustically), then
semantically
Craik and Tulving (1975) method
Craik and Lockhart (1972)
Started with premise, visual of word processed first, then sound, then meaning
Upper lower case, rhymes with —, semantic (would it fit into this sentence)
Greater depth of processing = better at recognising, especially if answer was yes
Tried again and replaced upper / lower with number of vowels, no evidence that slower processing increased recognition
Hyde and Jenkins 1973 supported this
