SOMEONE CAME ON TO SOMEONE
TO MAKE SEXUAL ADVANCES ON ANOTHER PERSON
Eg: There’s an anthropologist at school who totally came on to me during the interdepartmental potluck dinner.
MISLEADING
IF SOMETHING IS MISLEADING, IT CAUSES SOMEONE TO BELIEVE SOMETHING THAT IS NOT TRUE.
Eg: The online description is completedly misleading.
SHOW OF HANDS
A WAY TO CALL SOMEONE TO VOTE OR DECIDE ON SOMETHING
Eg: SHOW OF HANDS, who want pizza? And who wants Chinese?
DROP THE SUBJECT OR SIMPLY DROP IT
STOP TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT ANNOYS YOU OR UPSETS YOU
Eg: Look, why dont we just drop it?
CAME TO SOMEONE WITH A PROBLEM
TURN TO SOMEONE FOR HELP
COME UP WITH SOMETHING
INVENT OR THINK OF SOMETHING SUCH AS AN IDEA OR PLAN
Eg: Joey, you stink at lying. What am I gonna do? Don’t worry, we’ll come up with a good lie. I’ll help you practice it.
PUTTY IN ONE’s HAND
WHEN WE SAY SOMEONE IS LIKE PUTTY, IT MEANS THEY ARE EASILY INFLUENCED OR MANIPULATED (much like putty is easily molded in one’s hands)
Eg:
1) When I look in his eyes, I was putty in his hand.
2) He does whatever his wife wants. He’s putty in her hands.
3) I swear, any woman that hears it, they’re like putty.
TAKES THE HIGH ROAD
CHOOSE THE COURSE OF ACTION WHICH IS THE MOST MORAL OR ACCEPTABLE AND WHICH IS LEAST LIKELY TO HARM OR UPSET OTHER PEOPLE.
Eg: Okay, but imagine - a standing ovation for you will crush him! You know what? I’ll only look better if I take the high road you know, help out backstage. Let him have his moment.
RIP SOMEONE OFF
TO MAKE SOMEONE PAY TOO MUCH MONEY FOR A PRODUCT OR SERVICE
Eg:
500 dollar?! I think u got ripped off.
300 bucks for that shirt? That’s a complete rip-off.
LOAD UP ON SOMETHING
TO GET A LOT OF SOMETHING SO THAT YOU WILL HAVE ENOUGH
Eg: If you go to a long hike, you might want to load up on snacks for when you start to get hungry.
LIVE ON THE EDGE
IF YOU LIVE ON THE EDGE, YOU HAVE A LIFE WITH MANY DANGERS AND RISKS, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE YOU LIKE TO BEHAVE IN AN EXTREME AND UNUSUAL WAY.
HOWEVER, PEOPLE LIKE TO JOKE USING THIS EXPRESSION WHEN WE SAY THAT WE DO STHTHAT’S ACTUALLY INNOCENT OR NOT BERY DANGEROUS.
WOULD U MIND SPEAKING UP A BIT?
I M SORRY TO BUTT IN BUT…
as a more polite way instead of asking someone to speak more louder
alternative to i m sorry to interrupt but…
PEER AT SOMETHING
- TO LOOK INTENTLY WITH OR AS IF WITH DIFFICULTY
- TO APPEAR PARTIALLY OR DIMLY
Eg:
1) to peer into distance
2) the sun peered through the fog
SAVAGE
USE TO DESCRIBE SOMEONE WHO IS BRUTALLY HONEST
Eg: The feedback on my homework was savage- I thought I had done a great job.
SOMEONE IS SAVAGE IF WE THINK THEY ARE COOL FOR BEING BRAVE AND HONEST.
Eg: 1) Selina stood up to the bullies in her class! Now no one dares to pick on her or her friends. She’s savage.
2) Did you watch that comedy show last night? The guest speaker was hilarious when she was poking fun at her celebrity friend. She was savage!
set someone up with- to pair a person with someone else for a date or the possibility of a romantic relationship
she set me up with this guy that she met on a plane. So she gave my number to a complete stranger
