What were the aims of the L.O.N? (S.I.D.E)
S - stop war
I - improve lives
D - disarm
E - enforce the T.O.V
What was the structure of the L.O.N?
Council - 4 permanent members, met 5 times a year or in an emergency, had a veto.
Assembly - All members of the league. Met annually. 42 countries in 1920, 60 by 1934. Votes had to be unanimous.
Secretariat - Admin.
International Court of Justice - Solved border disputes, conflicts between countries.
Committees/commissions - Slavery, prisoners of war, diseases, refugees.
Was the structure of the league strong or weak?
WEAK - too many parts to it, votes had to be unanimous, right to veto, no army, no USA, no Germany, no Russia
What sanctions could the league impose?
Moral condemnation - Verbal. countries being publically criticized.
Economic sanctions - trade sanctions. Trying to lead to bankruptcy.
Military sanctions - if a country went against the League, force would be introduced so others follow the Leagues ruling.
Collective security - All countries work together to bring peace

Italy and Japan

Aaland islands - League gave their rules on.
Silesia - borders and they accepted it.
Prisoners of war - that they returned home. Lots of diseases cured. Slavery cut in several African countries
