Failure- Corfu 1923
3 strengths of the LoN
-written in all peace treaties after ww1, so all nations involved signed an agreement that recognized the LoN.
-large membership
-severe punishments: Economic sanctions and Moral Disapproval
4 weaknesses of the LoN
- structural weakness (understaffed & disorganised)
- limited membership (usa, russia, germany)
- lack of authority
- inability to achieve disarmament
2 parts - lack of authority
- enforce economic sanctions
-offending country can leave LoN
-offending country can trade with others not part of LoN - enforce military sanctions
-did not have an army to enforce measures
-members were still recovering from ww1.
-LoN give a verbal warning, offending country gets bolder over time.
Aaland Islands 1921 (Finland vs Sweden)
SUCCESS
-Aaland islands between the 2
-LoN decided the islands go to Finland
-Finland was not allowed to BUILD FORTS, no base for attacks.
-both countries agreed,
Corfu 1923 (Greece vs Italy)
-greece and albania boundaries redrawn.
-tellini, italian general was in charge- was murdered in GREECE while surveying the land.
-31 aug 1923, italy invaded Corfu. greece appealed to LoN for help.
-LoN did not want to upset italy. ruled that greece had to apologise and compensate.
-LoN is powerless against strong countries.
