What were the 2 main aims of the LoN?
Promote international cooperation and to achieve international peace and security
When was LoN formed?
Jan 1920 - after WW1
How many countries were members initially?
42
When did the Assembly meet and what had to happen?
Once a year and everyone had to agree for a decision to be made
Who was in the permanent council and when did they meet?
GBR, France, Italy, Japan and eventually Germany, 4 times a year
If moral guidelines were broken, what could PCOIJ do?
1) decide which country was correct
2) tell a country what it was doing wrong
3) impose sanctions on the offending countries
What were the 3 ways the LoN dealt with problems?
- Mitigation - talking through problems
- Moral condemnation - telling off
- Economic Sanctions - penalties designed to damage economies
Why was it contradictory that the LoN was based off of Wilson’s 14 points?
USA weren’t members because the Senet rejected because Wilson’s political opponents wanted to make him unpopular
When did Germany join the LoN?
1926
Why weren’t USSR allowed to join ?
Communist government worried other leaders
Why was it hard for the League to act on its threats?
Relied on armies of its members but they didn’t want to commit troops
Why was it hard to get things done?
Court of justice had no powers to make a country act and everyone had to agree
Who was in charge and why were they unsuccessful?
Britain and France but neither were strong enough after the war
