What the league did- league protested to Poland
Poland didnt move their army and the league couldnt send troops so the league did nothing
Upper Silesia-1921
Poland and Germany wanted the same land (Silesia). There was a plebisate for Silesians to vote. There was a border dispute
What the league did- The legue divided Silesia. Success for the league
Aaland Islands-1921
Sweden and Finland want the islands and are both willing to fight for them. They apply to the league.
What the league did- Finland got the islands but Sweden was happy with this decision so there was no war.
Corfu-1923
Italian general murdered on Greek Albanian border (Tellini)
Mussolini blames the Greeks and demands compensation plus execution.
31st August 1923 Italy occupies Corfu and kills 15 Greeks
The league condemned Mussolini but he talked to a member of the league and the money went to italy
Bulgaria-1925
Greek soldiers killed on the Bulgarian border
Greece invaded bulgaria
Bulgaria appealed to the league
What the league did- the league condemned the Greeks. The Greeks were ordered to remove troops and pay compensation. Greece thought the league were wrong but were too small to fight back
The wall street crash-1929
The American economy crashed and were plunged into depression
Global economies were affected as America traded and lent alot of money to countries after the war.
The whole world was faced with economic depression and some people turned to extremist parties like the Nazis.
What the league did-The league were powerless to do anything to help and leaders were resorting to violence
The leagues problems
The league wasn’t powerful enough.
Germany wasn’t allowed to join the league.
The senate stopped USA joining the league because they didn’t want to be in Europe’s problems.
The USSR also weren’t in it
The league had no real power as it had no big strong countries.
There was only economic sanctions which weren’t ideal as people tried to build their economies up after the war.
There was a large organization and everyone had to agree in the assembly or council before anything could happen.
The Ruhr
An industrial region in Germany was invaded and occupied by France in 1923 after Germany had failed to keep up its reparation payments. The French began shipping it’s products back to France.
What did the league do- The league didn’t do anything but the USA intervened with the Dawes plan.
The Manchurian crisis-1931
Japan wanted to expand its territory.
It wanted Manchuria so it faked an explosion on the South Manchurian railway because they wanted a reason to invade Manchuria.
They invaded Manchuria.
What did the league do- The league sent over Lord Lytton to assess the situation. He produced a report that said Japan was in the wrong. Japan was angry with this and left the league.
This meant the league had 0 power left
