Any type of medical order for end of life planning.
Specifies treatment to be used when a person is very ill. These treatments are what the person wants to receive, not what he wishes to avoid.
Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST)
Tool that helps medical professionals honor a persons wishes about health care. A medical order that instructs medical professionals not to perform CPR on a patient or resident in the event of cardiac or respiratory arrest. A DNR order means that medical personnel will not attempt emergency CPR if the heartbeat or breathing stops.
Do-not-resuscitate (DNR)
Appoints someone else to mae medical decisions for a person in the event he or she becomes unable to do so
Durable Power of Attorney for health care (POA) also called Care Proxy
the knowledge of right and wrong-Ethical person has a sense of duty + responsibility towards others (ethics tell people what they should do)
ETHICS
Tell them what they must do. laws are usually based on ethics
LAWS
A law passed by the federal government that includes minimum standards for nursing assistants training, staffing requirements resident assessment instructions and information on rights for residents
OMNIBUS BUDGET RECONCILIATION ACT (OBRA)
a detailed form with guidelines for assessing residents in long term care facilities
MINIMUM DATA SET (MDS)
numerous rights identified in the OBRA law that relate to how residents must be treated while living in a facility they; they provide an ethical code of conduct for healthcare wokers
RESIDENT RIGHTS
the process in which a person with the help of a doctor, makes informed decisions about his or her healthcare
INFORMED CONSENT
failure to provide needed care that results in physical, mental or emotional harm to a person
NEGLECT
actions or the failure to act or provide the proper care for a resident, resulting in unintended injury. example; an NA forgets to lock a wheelchair before transferring her
NEGLIGENCE
occurs when a person is injured due to professional misconduct through negligence, carelessness or lack of skill
MALPRACTICE
Communication involving the use of spoken or written words or sounds
Verbal Communication
People who are legally required to report suspected or observed abuse or neglect
Mandatory Reporters
The repeated abuse of drugs or alcohol in a way that is harmful
Substance Abuse
Verbal, physical or sexual abuse of staff by other staff members, residents or visitors
Workplace Violence
Difficulty swallowing
Dysphagia
Loss of abilities to understand or express speech, may be brought on by stroke head injury or brain tumors
Aphasia
One side of the body is weakened
Hemiparesis
One side of the body is paralyzed
Hemiplegia
A condition that occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel leaks or ruptures within the brain; also called a stroke
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
The ability to see things up front but not far
Near-sightedness (Myopia)

An accident, problem or unexpected event during the course of care that is not part of the normal routine in the healthcare facility
Incident
Skin that is blue or grey. Due to deficient oxygenation of the blood. Rings that are too tight are one example
Cyanotic
What a person sees, hears, touches or smells.
Objective Information (Signs)
Information that a person did not observe, but is based on something reported but can’t be verified
Subjective Information
