Petiole
The stem of a leaf or leaflet
Sessile
Leaves lacking a Petiole (stem)
Rachis
The stem of a compound leaf that joins to the petiole
Margin
The edge of the leaf or leaflet
Stipule
The minileaf near the node where the petiole starts
Stomata
The pore that the leaf breathes through. It looks like a mouth.
Simple Leaves
One leaf on the petiole, though it can be big and lobed
Compound leaves
More than one leaf blade shares a common stem
Palmate Compound Leaf
The leaves have a common point of attachment in the rachis, which then attaches to the petiole
Pinnately compound
each leaflet has a separate point of attachment on the rachis
Alternate
The leaves are at different heights on the twig
Opposite
the leaves are the same height but on opposing sides
Whorled
there are more than two leaves on the twig, arranged in a spiral
Phyllotaxy
the description and labeling of the leaf arrangement
