Leaf Structure Flashcards
1
Q
Cuticle:
A
Waxy layer that prevents water loss from top of the leaf.
2
Q
Epidermis:
A
Transparent cell that allows sunlight to pass through to the palisade cell.
3
Q
Palisade:
A
Found at the top of the cell and contains many chloroplasts which absorbs sunlight.
4
Q
Spongy mesophyll layer:
A
- Irregurlary shaped cells which create air spaces to allow gaseous exchange to take place.
- Do not contain many chloroplasts.
5
Q
Vascular bundle:
A
Made up of xylem and phloem.
6
Q
Xylem:
A
Vessel which transports water and dissolved minerals and has lignified walls made of cellulose.
7
Q
Phloem:
A
Vessel which transports nutrients.
8
Q
Stomata:
A
- Little holes that open and close to allow gaseous exchange to take place.
- It closes to prevent water loss and open to let gases come in and out,,
- When guard cells lose water, the stoma close (at night), while the aroma open when guard cells gain water and swell (during the day.)
