Leaf Structure Flashcards
What is a leaf?
Organ
Leafs structure is
Broad and flat to capture sunlight
Function of veins
Carry water and food around the leaf and rest of plant.
Only some plants have
Chlorophyll & Chloroplasts
Describe the Stomata
Small holes on the underside of the leaf structures. Allows certain gasses in and out
First Layer of leaf structure =
Cutile = layer of wax, prevents water loss via evaporation. Transparent to allow light into cell.
Wax is
Hydrophobic = Repels Water
2 types of veins
Phloem = Transports glucose down the leaf
Xylem = Transports H2O & Minereals up the leaf
Guard Cells =
Surrond stoma in lower surface
Changes shape to open and close the stoma
Epidermises
Upper = Protective layer lets sunlight through to cells.
Lower = Same thing but has stomata
Spongy mesophyll layer =
Where photosynthesis occurs & contains veins and guard cells
What is glucose for?
ATP energy to be formed for cellular respiration
Growth
Nutrients
Storage for startch and more
