Leaf structure Flashcards
What is the waxy cuticle?
Water proof top layer of leaf. protects leaf from drying out, and transports light to pass through.
What is Upper epidermis?
Protects layer below waxy cuticle, alows light to pass through.
What is Palisade tissue cell?
main source of photosynthesis, also packed with chloroplast (green part in plant cell), packed tightly.
What is Spongy tissue cell?
transports water and gas, and is loosely packed in structure. contains Xylem tissue cell and Phloem tissue cell
What is xylem tissue cell?
Dead cell, only contains the cell wall. Transports water to leaves
What is Phloem tissue cells?
Tube like in leave, transports food (glocose or suger), and uses active transport in the leave.
What is Lower Epidermis?
Protects lower layer of leave
What is the Stomata?
Opening into the cell to allow gases to pass in and out. Uses difusion
What is a Guard cell?
Responsible for opening and closing stomata which alows Gases to pass in and out (expands and contracts)
What is the group called for Palisade tissue and Spongy Tissue?
They are called Mesophyll
What is the group called for Xylem tissue and Phloem tissue called?
They are called Vascular bundle
What does the Xylem and Phloem do together?
Move water and suger, it does this by running down the stem and up the leaves.
What is in a Vascular bundle?
Xylem tissue cell and Phloem tissue cell
What is in a Mesophyll?
Palisade tissue cell and Spongy tissue cell
Think (Blank) for Xylem
Water
Think (blank) for Phloem
Suger
What are the steps in water transport?
1) uptake in roots
2) movment up the plant stem
3) Water exits through leave
What do the roots do in water transport in a plant?
1) water enters through the root Via osmosis
2) water passes from roots up to the xylem tissue in the leave (water presure from incoming water pushes water up to the Xylem)
What is Water Transport?
How water moves up throughout a plant
What are the steps of water transport in leaves?
1)what moves out the phloem through the guard cell
2) water vapor moves out from osmosis
3) guard cells close
What is Adhesian?
When water is attracted to xylem wall.
What is Cohesion?
Molecular pull each other to the xylem

9) Guard cell
What is Turgor pressure?
The pressure of the large vacuole pushing out on the cell wall.
