leaf layers Flashcards
chlorophyll
The “green blood” in plant cells. In the presence of light, it makes sugar from carbon dioxide and water.
glucose
A form of unrefined sugar found in plant and animal tissues.
(Made up of Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen)
photosynthesis
The process whereby chlorophyll traps the sun’s energy and uses it to make glucose.
epidermis
The outermost layer of cells covering the leaf.
waxy cuticle
A protective, waxy coating made by the epidermis to help waterproof the leaf.
absorb
To take in, or soak up.
transparent
Easily seen through; mostly clear.
palisade tissue
A layer of tissue in the leaf blade that is made up of long, narrow
cells. The leaf’s supply of green blood is packed into these cells.
sponge tissue
A layer of tissue in the leaf blade that is made up of plump, irregularly shaped cells jumbled together loosely so that there are many pockets of air between cells.
water vapor
The gas form of water that is suspended in the air.
dissolve
To make a solid or gas go into a liquid solution.
stomata
A small opening in a plant leaf to let gases in and out of the plant
concentration
To increase in amount. Often used in reference to how tightly packed something is.
photon
The basic unit that makes up all light.
evaporate
To change from a liquid into a vapor, or gas.
