What is authoritarian management?
When a manager makes decisions without reference to anyone else. There is little freedom and the boss is very controlling. Authority.
Advantages of authoritarian management.
Viewed as essential in some situations, e.g. in times of crises.
Important if employees are not self motivated.
Some employees like clear instructions.
Disadvantages of authoritarian management.
High levels of supervision needed.
Demotivation can occur amongst employees.
Poor relationship between manager and employees.
What is paternalistic management?
This has the attributes of authoritarian but takes into account the interest of the workforce. They are like a mother or father figure. The manager makes decisions in the end. Staff are part of the extended family. LOYALTY.
Advantages of paternalistic.
Employees feel like they can tell the boss anything.
Loyalty.
No monetary methods of motivation needed.
Disadvantages of paternalistic.
Over reliance on the manager.
Harder to discipline staff.
Treats employees over friendly.
What is democratic leadership?
VOTE. Employees have a role in decision making. Works well with smaller businesses.
Advantages of democratic.
Employees have a say and feel valued.
Employees are motivated to work.
Employees feel they have more responsibility /recognition.
Disadvantages of democratic.
Time consuming- longer decision making time.
Loss of managerial control.
Wrong decisions can be made, employees are not experts.
What is laissez-faire management?
Doing your own thing. Works well with creative people. Employees can make their own decisions without going to the manager.
Advantages of laissez faire.
Good when there is a creative element in the work.
It is good when the employees are skilled.
A lot of people do not like to be over supervised.
Disadvantages of laissez faire.
Little incentives to work.
The manager may get paid for not doing much.
It only suits certain job types.
