Leadership Principles Flashcards
Custom Obsession
Leaders start with the customer and work backwards, and it all starts with the person using the product and their trust.
Ownership
Think long term and don’t sacrifice long-term value for short-term results. Act on behalf of the entire company, beyond just the team. Never say, “That’s not my job.”
Invent and Simplify
Expect and require innovation from yourself and from teams. Find new ways to simplify. Be externally aware and looking for new ideas everywhere.
[Leaders] Are Right, A Lot
Strong judgement and good instincts. Seek diverse perspectives and work to disconfirm your beliefs.
Learn and Be Curious
Never done learning, always seeking to improve. Curious about possibilities, act to explore them.
Hire and Develop the Best
Raise the performance bar with every hire. Recognize talent and willingly move talent up the organization. Develop leaders.
Insist on the Highest Standards
Have relentlessly high standards. Continue to raise the bar and drive your team to deliver high quality products, services and processes. Ensure defects don’t get sent down the line.
Think Big
Create and communicate a bold direction that inspires results. Think differently and look around corners for ways to serve customers.
Bias for Action
Speed matters in business. Decisions and actions are reversible and can be taken without extensive study. Value on calculated risk taking.
Frugality
Accomplish more with less. Constraints can breed results.
Earn Trust
Listen attentively, speak candidly, treat others respectfully. Vocally self-critical.
Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit
Obligation to respectfully challenge decisions when you disagree, even when doing so is uncomfortable or exhausting. Leaders have conviction and are tenacious. Leaders don’t compromise for social cohesion, and commit wholly to a decision.
Deliver Results
Leaders focus on the key inputs and deliver with the right quality, on time. They rise to the occasion and never settle.
