Leadership Flashcards
Leadership Theories
-Trait theories; Herbert spencer(superheroes); leaders are born not made. Traits are personal possessions.(intelligence, self-confidence, extraversion)
-Behavioral; emphasizes the behavior of a leader.(Initiating/Production oriented-assign tasks and consideration/employee-oriented; interpersonal relationships) opportunistic style &materialistic/partenal
-Contingency; the leaders choose the best behavior depending on the situation. Leadership has two behavioral dimensions: directive and supportive. Each has to be applied appropriately in a given situation
I am a leader that makes me an effective leader
False, studies are interested in both emergence of leadership and leadership effectiveness. They are not the same!!
Traits can predict leadership and better at predicting leadership effectiveness(behavioral approach)
Traits can predict leadership, but they are better at predicting leader emergence than effectiveness
Hersey &Blanchard (Situational theory)
The success of this model depends on the leader’s ability to identify the situation and correctly diagnose:
The performance readiness of the employee
The goal or the task we are trying to achieve (i.e., what is the problem we are facing? How complicated the task is? What is the skill level of my employee?
What are the two theories for contingency approach
Situational theory
Path goal theory
Path Goal Theory (Robert House)- under contingency approach
The main merit of the situational leader theory is in its acknowledgment that there’s no one best leadership style. Rather, leaders need to be adaptive, and willing to change their behaviour according to the situation. Moreover, leaders need to be able to acknowledge the various abilities and willingness levels of the followers and adapt accordingly.
The main assumption here is that it is the role of the leader to help the follower achieve their own goals. That is, the leader act here to help the follower flourish in the organization while addressing their needs.
Features in Path-Goal theory
Directive
Supportive
Participative
Achievement oriented
Path-Goal theory asks what are the motivational need of my employees? The role of the manager is to set goals together with employees, and than remove obstacles from the way so employee can fulfill their goals
What is the most expensive way to motivate people
MONEY
Diff. bet. leadership & mgt
managers maintain stability while leaders create a change
Transformational Leadership (Burn )
was once called transactional to transformational leadership. Transformational leadership occurs when leaders and followers raise one another to a higher level of motivation and morality.
at the heart of Burn’s TL stands a
moral commitment. a process of evolving relationships bet. leaders and followers
The Four Is on Transformational Leadership
Charisma
-Idealized Influence(attribute):Leaders become role models. They are admire, respected and trusted. They put their followers’ needs above their own
-Inspirational motivation; Motivate by providing meaning and challenge. Show enthusiasm and optimism
-Intellectual stimulation; Encourage creativity and innovation. Invite to challenge assumptions and reframe the situation
-Individualized consideration; Focuses on development & mentoring of followers and attends to their indiv. needs.
According to Bass why is Charisma necessary but not sufficient for TL to emerge.
Only when adding the other two components (other two I’s) transformational leadership is born.
TL seek to develop followers and even help them become leaders, while charismatic leadership often prefer to keep followers dependent on the leader and increase personal loyalty to the leader
Trans. leadership & Transf. leadership
Management (induces compliance in manifest behavior using rewards, sanctions & formal authority) vs Leadership(induces change in values, attitudes, behavior using personal examples &expertise)
