He was old so he had nothing Toulouse
First nobleman to sign up. Led the largest army. 60 years old. A wealthy landowner. Intended not to return home. Travelled with his wife and son.
Raymond of Toulouse
Experienced fighter and had fought with the Byzantines against the Muslims too. His younger half brother inherited all of the land. He had a small but well equipped army.
Bohemond of Taranto
Took the cross even though he had previously been an ally of Henry IV. No great war experience. Intended to return home. Joined because everyone else was.
Godfrey of Bouillon
Godfrey’s brother. Landless. Considerable military experience. Joined at last minute. Intended to remain in the Holy Land.
Baldwin of Boulogne
Had a HUGHge task to lift his brothers excommunication
First to set out on Crusade. Well connected. Lacked land and wealth. He was sent on Crusade to lift his brother’s excommunication.
Hugh of Vermandois
Eldest son of William the Conqueror. Had found Normandy difficult to govern. Had been at war with his brother and Urban encouraged their reconciliation. Will gave him 10,000 silver marks and lots of men to join his army. Possibly went on Crusade to escape his problems.
Robert of Normandy
Father had been on pilgrimage to Jerusalem and was a friend of Emperor Alexius. Wished to emulate his father.
Robert of Flanders
Son-in-law to William the Conqueror. His country was small but wealthy. Possible his wife made him go on Crusade as she was shocked with his later desertion and sent him back on the next crusade.
