What formed the basis of this leaders popularity?
Danton is best known for his powerful oratory (ability to speak persuasively in public). He was vocal about the need to take action in July 1789, and by October was so popular that he was elected president of his local ‘section’ meeting in Paris. By 1790, he was involved in the Cordeliers Club, which opened its doors to working people.
What made this leader become involved in revolutionary activity?
George Danton (1759-1794) did not state what led him into patriotic politics. He seems to have just been ‘created’ a revolutionary by the events of 1789. A member of the third estate he trained in Law, and from their was drawn into the political and constitutional debate
What is it that gave this leader legitimacy ?
Danton was elected president of the Jacobin Club in March 1793; he would claim that his ‘political legitimacy’ came from the adoration of the crowd, and from his election to be president of the Cordeliers section of Paris as early as October 1789
