Le Chatelier's Principle Flashcards
What is le chatelier’s principle
If you change the conditions of a reversible reaction the system will counteract that change
What happens if the temperature decreases
The equilibrium will move in the exothermic direction to produce more heat- meaning you’ll get more products for the exothermic reaction and less for the endothermic
What happens if the temperature increases
The equilibrium will move in the endothermic direction to lower the Surrounding temp- meaning more products are produced from the endothermic reaction and less from exothermic
Under what circumstances can pressure be part of le chatelier’s principle
Only equilibriums with gasses
What happens when the pressure increases
The equilibrium tries to lower it by moving the reaction to the side with the least particle/ molecules of gas
What happens when the pressure decreases
The equilibrium tries to increase it by moving the reaction to the side with the most particles/ molecules of gas
If the concentration of reactants or products is changed how is the equilibrium effected?
It no longer is an equilibrium
What happens if the concentration of reactants increases?
The system makes more products out of those reactants - ( and vice versa)
What happens when the concentration of products decreases?
The system makes less reactants - (and vice versa)
