Le Chatelier’s Principle Flashcards
What does le chateliers principle state
States that position of equilibrium will move (left/right) to counteract any changes that are made to the system
What does increasing temperature do
Favours the endothermic reaction as this removed the excess heat from the system to lessen the effect of the initial increase
What does decreasing the temperature do
Favours the exothermic reaction as heat needs to be gained as exothermic will release energy into the system
What does increasing the pressure do
Favours the side of the reaction with fewer moles of gas as this will help to reduce the pressure so will increase the yield of the products on side of reaction with fewest moles of gas
What does decreasing pressure do
Favours the side of the reaction with more moles as pressure has been lost
What does increasing the concentration of reactants do
Equilibrium will shift towards products and will favour the reaction direction that produces the products as more molecules are available to react to form products so it will increase the yield of the products
What happens if concentration of reactants is decreased
The reaction that forms the reactants will be favoured to counteract decrease, increase yield of reactants
What happens to equilibrium if catalyst added
Do not affect position of equilibrium as they affect the forward and backward reaction equally
