Le Chatelier Flashcards
What is Le Chateliers principle
Le Chateliers principle is that when there is a disturbance in a system it will readjust to reach equilibrium
What is the effect of a shift in concentration on an equilibrium reaction?
If a higher concentration of a product is achieved, then the equilibrium shifts to the left (towards reactants)
should a lower concentration of products be achieved, the equilibrium shifts to the right (towards products).
What is the effect of a shift in temperature on a system
An increase in temperature causes the system to shift to favour the endothermic change
A decrease in temperature causes the system to shift to favour the exothermic reaction
What is the effect of inert gases on a system
Inert gases have no effect on the system as long as temperature and pressure remain the same
What is the effect of a catalyst on a system
There is no effect on the equilibrium except it is reached faster
What is the effect of a shift in volume on an equilibrium reaction?
Should the volume increase, the pressure will decrease. this causes a shift towards the side with the greatest number of moles of gas.
Should the volume decrease, the pressure will increase. This causes a shit towards the side with the smallest number of moles of gas.
