What is hepatitis?
-Inflammation of the liver
Common causes of hepatitis?
- Viral infection
- Alcoholism
What happens with prolonged hepatitis?
-Fibrosis= Cirrhosis
What is Cirrhosis?
-Chronic end-stage liver disease.
What is portal hypertension?
-Increased pressure in the hepatic portal system due to cirrhosis
What is ascites?
-Increased fluid in the peritoneal cavity
What are ascites caused by?
- Obstruction of lymphatic flow
- Portal hypertension
When does liver failure occur?
-When 80-90% of liver function is lost.
What vitamins are stored in the liver?
- A
- B12
- D
- K
- E
What happens to vitamins in the liver with liver disease?
- Impaired fat absorption
- Reduced storage of fat-soluble vitamins = vitamin deficiency
What is intrahepatic cholestasis?
-Widespread blockage of small ducts
What is extrahepatic cholestasis?
-Blockage of bile from the gallbladder to the duodenum
What are gallstones?
- 80% cholesterol
How are gallstones diagnosed?
-Ultrasound
What are the symptoms of gallstones?
- Pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
