Layers Of The Skin Flashcards
Stratum Corneum ( Horny Layer)
Outermost Layer of the epidermis, composed of corneocytes
STRATUM LUCIDUM ( clear layer)
Clear, transparent layer of the epidermis under the stratum corneum; thickest on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
STRATUM GRANULOSUM “grainy layer”
Layer of the epidermis composed of cells filled with keratin that resemble granules:replaces cells shed from the stratum corneum
STRATUM SPINOSUM “spiny layer”
Layer of the epidermis above the stratum germinativum (basal) layer containing desmosomes, the intercellular connections made of proteins.
STRATUM GERMINATIVUM “basal layer”
active layer of the epidermis; cell mitosis takes place here, that produces new epidermal skin cells and is responsible for growth.
PAPILLARY LAYER
first layer of the dermis; contains dermal papillae which forms the epidermal/dermal junction. Nerve endings are also found here.
RETICULAR LAYER
denser and deeper layer of the dermis, comprised mainly of collagen and elastin.
