Layers of the heart Flashcards
1
Q
Where is the heart located?
A
Middle mediastinum
2
Q
What is is enclosed within?
A
Pericardial sac
3
Q
Explain the fibrous pericardium
A
Heart is surrounded by the fibrous pericardium - Tough, fibrous, cartilaginous layer - Doesn't stretch - So accumulation of fluid doesnt causes heart to inwardly expand rather than outwardly = Compression of heart = Cardiac Tamponade - Affecting filling of ventricles decreased EDV decreased SV decreased CO decreased BP - Relieved by pericardiocentesis (removes fluid)
4
Q
What is the visceral pericardium?
A
Inner layer of heart
AKA epicardium
5
Q
What is the parietal pericardium?
A
Outer layer of heart
Fibrous tissue
6
Q
What is contained between the visceral and parietal pericardium?
A
Pericardial Cavity
Containing pericardial fluid
7
Q
What is the pericardium innervated by?
A
Phrenic nerve
8
Q
Which 3 places does pericarditis pain present?
A
Neck
Arms
One or both shoulders (often left)
9
Q
What are the 3 layers? (outer to inner)
A
Fibrous pericardium
Parietal layer of serous pericardium
Visceral layer of serous pericardium
