Q

Explain the fibrous pericardium

A
Heart is surrounded by the fibrous pericardium
- Tough, fibrous, cartilaginous layer
- Doesn't stretch
- So accumulation of fluid doesnt causes heart to inwardly expand rather than outwardly
= Compression of heart
= Cardiac Tamponade
- Affecting filling of ventricles
decreased EDV
decreased SV
decreased CO
decreased BP
- Relieved by pericardiocentesis (removes fluid)
