Layers of the eye Flashcards
Fibrous layer
- Made upon the sclera (back) and the cornea (front)
- Complete the whole way round
- Most outer layer
How is the ratio of sclera to cornea subdivided?
Sclera: posterior 5/6th
Cornea: anterior 1/6th
Appearance of the cornea and the sclera
cornea: transparent
Sclera: opaque
function of cornea and sclera
cornea: allows rays through
Sclera: point of attachment of muscles of the eye
What makes up the vascular layer of the eye
- Choroid
- Ciliary body
- Iris
Function of the components of the vascular layer
Ciliary body:
- Suspends the lens via suspensory ligaments
- Produces acqueos humour
- Attached to the ciliaris muscle (controls the activity (focus) of the lens)
Choroid:
-blood supply to outer layers of the retina
Iris:
-controls the diameter of the eye and therefore the amount of light entering the eye
Characters of the lens
Transparent and biconvex
Can change shape to become more of less convex
What makes up the sensory layer of the eye
Retina
Incomplete layer
Ends up at the ora serrata
Made up of 10 layers
Function of the retina?
site where image is formed due to the presence of rods and cones
Segments of the eye
Anterior:
- In front of the lens
- Filled with aqueous humour
Posterior:
- Behind the lens of the eye
- Filled with virtuous gel
Chambers of the eye
divisions of the anterior segment of the eye
Anterior: in front of the iris
Posterior: behind the iris
