LAYERS OF THE EARTH Flashcards
What is the geosphere?
It’s the solid part of the Earth
What are the 3 main layers of the Earth?
The crust, mantle and core
How is the crust?
It’s thin and it covers the surface of the Earth
What are the two types of crust?
Continental and oceanic crust
How is the continental crust?
Between 10 and 70 km thick and made of rocks (granite, clay and slate).
How is the oceanic crust?
Between 6 and 10 km thick and includes ocean floor. It contains rocks (basalt)
What is the mantle?
It’s molten rocks and the most of them is peridotite
What are the two types of mantle?
Upper and lower mantle
How is the upper mantle?
It’s mostly solid and it has molten areas
What is the lower mantle?
It is a layer that contains solid materials
What is the core?
It’s the inner part of the Earth. It’s mostly iron and nickel.
What is the outer core?
It’s molten materials
It has a very hight temperature and a little bit less of presion, so it melts
It’s liquid.
What is the inner core?
It’s the densest and hottest part. It has a lot of temperature, but it has a extreme pressure, so it’s solid.
What is the name of the discontiunity that separate the crust from the mantle?
It’s the MOHOROVIĈIĆ DISCONTINUITY
What is the name of the discontiunity that separate tha mantle from the core?
It’s the GUTEBERG DISCONTIUNITY
