Layers of Skin Flashcards
What is the epidermis?
The outermost layer of the skin
What is the dermis?
The inner layer of the skin
What is the hypodermis?
The innermost layer of the skin that binds the skin to muscle
What type of tissue is in the epidermis?
Stratified squamous epithelial tissue
What type of tissues are in the dermis?
Loose connective and nervous tissue
What type of tissue makes up the subcutaneous layer?
Adipose tissue
What is the function of the merocrine gland?
Secretes sweat and waste onto skin
What is the function of the apocrine gland?
Secretes oil and waste into the hair. Begins functioning at puberty.
What are exocrine glands?
Secretes through ducts straight onto skin instead of into bloodstream
What is collagen?
Provides structural support to the extracellular space of connective tissue.
What is the extracellular matrix?
It is non-cellular components that helps cells to bind together and regulate a number of cellular functions, such as adhesion, migration, proliferation, and differentiation
What is endocrine tissue?
Tissue that makes and releases hormones that travel in the bloodstream
What is sebum?
Oily substance secreted by the sebaceous gland that lubricates the skin
What is the basement membrane?
Type of extracellular matrix that lines the basal side of epithelial and endothelial tissues
What is a tendon?
It connects muscle to bone
