Layer 3/Network Flashcards
ND protocol
Neighbor Discovery - IPv6 only
SLAAC
Stateless Address Autoconfiguration - IPv6 only similar to DHCP in IPv4
Dual Stack
Device is “Dual Stack” when it can process both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses simultaneously.
Convergence
process whereby routers running dynamic routing algorithms agree on the network topology.
RIP
Routing Information Protocol -
EIGRP
Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol
OSPF
Open Shortest Path First- link state protocol for network discovery. Designed to support classless addressing.
Tagged as protocol 89 in the IP datagram’s Protocol Field
BGP
Border Gateway Protocol - type of exterior gateway protocol for communications between routers in separate autonomous systems.
Works over TCP/179
AD
administrative distance- value that router places on different routing protocols for comparing trustworthiness.
Smaller value = greater trust
CIDR
Classless Inter-Domain Routing a.k.a. Supernetting
VLSM
variable length subnet masking - classless addressing technique. Allows different length netmasks to be used within the same IP network
Command to show active routing table
‘show route’, ‘show ip route’
Command to show routing table
‘route print’
Command used to test entire path between nodes, output shows hops, ip address, time taken for response.
‘traceroute’ -Linux/Cisco
‘tracert’ - Windows
STP
Spanning Tree Protocol
