Laws/Theory's Flashcards
Charles’ Law
As volume goes up, temperature goes up. (proportional relationship)
Boyle’s Law
As volume goes up, pressure goes down. (Inverse relationship)
Charles’ Law formula
V1/T1 = V2/T2
Boyle’s Law Formula
P1V1 = P2V2
Avogadro’s Theory:
equal volumes of gases at the same temperature and pressure contain the same number of molecules regardless of their chemical nature and physical properties
Kinetic molecular theory:
Molecules are point masses (they have no volume)
Gas molecules exert no force on each other unless they collide
Collisions of molecules with each other or the walls of the container do not decrease the energy of the system
The molecules of a gas are in constant and random motion
The temperature of a gas depends on its average kinetic energy avg(1/2mv 2) = 3/2kT . In other words, the energy of an ideal gas is entirely kinetic.
Under what conditions is a real gas most similar to an ideal gas?
High temperature and low pressure
