Laws of Thermodynamics Flashcards
Zeroth Law
If two bodies are in thermal equilibrium with a third body, they are in thermal equilibrium with each other
First Law
Energy is always conserved, cannot be made or destroyed.
Q - W = delta U
Q = heat
W = Worl
U = internal energy
Second Law
Heat always flows from a warmer body to a cooler body.
Kelvin-Planck statement
No heat engine can have a thermal efficiency of 100%. It is a limitation.
Claussius Statement
There will always be work input to refrigerators and heat pumps.
Because; impossible to construct a device that operates in a cycle and produces no effect than to transfer heat from a low temp body to a high temp body.
Third Law
A system at absolute 0 temperature has 0 entropy.
