Touchlines
What is the name of the lines that run along the sides of the field with the goals?
Goal lines
What is the name of the small box immediately in front of the goal?
Goal area or goal box
What is the name of the bigger box that surrounds the goal area?
Penalty area or penalty box
What is the name of the line in the middle of the field that divides the field in half?

How is play restarted if a ball becomes defective?
Play is restarted by dropping the replacement ball where the original ball became defective
Shin guards can be worn on top of socks, true or false?
False - shin guards must be covered by socks
Each goalkeeper must wear colors that distinguish them from other players and officials, true or false?
True
Can a referee change a decision if they realize that their decision was incorrect if the play has restarted?
No
Can a referee change a decision after getting advice/feedback from an assistant referee after play has restarted?
No
What is “advantage”?
When a referee allows play to continue when an offense/penalty occurs and the non-offending team will benefit from the advantage; the penalty should be called if the anticipated advantage does not ensue at that time or within a few seconds
When more than one offense/penalty takes place at the same time, which one is punished?
The more serious offense, in terms of physical severity and tactical impact, is punished
Should a referee allow play to continue until the ball is out of play if a player is only slightly injured?
Yes, though with kids it is probably a good idea to stop play unless someone is about to score
Should a referee allow play to continue until the ball is out of play if a player is seriously injured?
No, play should be stopped
What should the referee do if an extra ball, object, or animal enters the field of play during the match?
Stop play, and restart with a dropped ball, only if it interferes with play; if the object does not interfere with play, allow play to continue and have it removed as quickly as possible
What is the signal for an indirect free kick?
One arm straight up in the air
What is the signal for a direct free kick?
One arm straight out to the side (perpendicular to the body) in the direction of the kick
What is the signal for advantage?
Both arms straight ahead (like a zombie)
What is the signal for a penalty kick?
Left arm extended out at 45 degree angle (halfway between pointing straight down and pointing straight out)
What is the signal for a corner kick?
Arm extended out to the side and slightly raised (above shoulder level)
What is the signal for a goal kick?
Right arm extended out at 45 degree angle (halfway between pointing straight down and pointing straight out)
Name three responsibilities of an assistant referee
1) Which team is entitled to a corner kick, goal kick, or throw in after the ball leaves the field of play
2) A player in an offside position may be penalized
3) A substitution is requested
What is the assistant referee’s signal for a substitution request?
Both arms extended overhead, with flag held horizontally in between
What does the assistant referee do to signal who has the right to a throw in?
Arm/flag out to the side in the direction of the team with the right to the ball; arm is at an angle, slightly elevated above shoulder
What is the assistant referee’s signal for offside?
One arm/flag straight up in the air
What is the assistant referee’s signal for a corner kick?
Right arm/flag extended out at 45 degree angle (halfway between pointing straight down and pointing straight out)
What is the assistant referee’s signal for a goal kick?
Arm/flag pointed straight out at the goal
If a penalty kick has to be taken at the end of a half, is the half extended until the kick is completed?
Yes
Restarts include kickoffs, free kicks (direct and indirect), penalty kicks, throw-ins, goal kicks and corner kicks. If the referee stops play and the law does not require one of the above restarts, how does play restart?
Dropped ball
The team that wins the coin toss gets to decide what?
Which goal it will attack in the first half (their opponent takes the kickoff)
The team that is losing gets to take the kickoff in the second half, true or false?
False - the team that didn’t take the kickoff in the first half gets to take it in the second half
All players must be in their own half of the field of play during a kickoff, true or false?
False - the player taking the kickoff must be in the center circle, but they do not have to be on their half
At what point is the ball in play on a kickoff?
When it is kicked and clearly moves in any direction (even backwards)
Can a goal be scored directly against the opponents on a kickoff?
Yes
If a restart requires a dropped ball, where does the referee drop the ball?
At the spot where the ball was when play was stopped, unless play was stopped inside the goal area/box
If a restart requires a dropped ball, and play was stopped when the ball was inside the goal area/box, where does the referee drop the ball?
The ball is dropped on the goal area line which is parallel to the goal line at the point nearest to where the ball was when play was stopped
If a dropped ball (restart) touches a player before it touches the ground, what should happen?
The ball is dropped again; the ball must touch the ground before touching a player
Can a player score directly off a dropped ball?
No, a dropped ball is an indirect restart so it must touch at least two players before entering the goal; if it does enter the goal without touching two players, play would be restarted with a goal kick
At what point is a ball considered to be out of play?
When the ball entirely passes over the goal line or touchline on the ground or in the air, and play has been stopped by the referee
Can a ball stay in play if it bounces off a flagpost and returns to the field?
Yes, provided it hasn’t entirely crossed over a goal line or touchline
