laws of motion Flashcards
what is Newtons first law of motion?
A body in motion stays in motion at constant velocity
and a body at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by a
net external (unbalanced) force.
what is Newtons first law also known as?
Inertia
what are the implications of Newtons first law?
If there is zero net force on a body, it cannot
accelerate, and therefore must move at constant
velocity. it cannot turn, speed up or slow down.
the higher the the mass, the ____ the inertia
greater
what is zero net force?
when forces on an object are balanced, there is no net force
what is the normal force?
the push that a surface (or object) exerts back on an object that comes into contact with it
what does the normal force always do?
act perpendicular to, and away from, the surface.
what is Newtons second law?
A body accelerates when acted upon by a net external force. The acceleration is proportional to the net force and is in
the direction which the net force acts.
what is the equation for weight?
w=mg
what is Newtons third law?
For every action there exists an equal and opposite reaction.
