Laws of motion Flashcards
What is 1 Newton?
The force that increases the velocity of 1kg by 1m/s every s (kg.m/s2)
What is the first law of motion?
In the absence of external forces, an object at rest remains at rest and an object in motion continues at a constant velocity (constant speed in a straight line).

Is momentum directly or inversely proportional to mass?
Directly proportional.
Mass specifies how much inertia is present e.g. the heavier, the more force required to accelerate or decelerate.
So the bigger the mass, the more momentum it will have after inertia is overcome (think a wrecking ball)
What does increasing the size of a mass do to its acceleration?
It decreases it.
2x mass = half acceleration (inversely proportional)
What is the second law of motion?
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the force acting upon it and inversely proportional to its mass.
Acceleration = force/mass
What is the third law of motion?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
Near the earths surface, what acceleration will gravity have on a falling object?
What is this in Newtons?
It will accelerate a falling object by 9.81m/s2 (9.81 m per s every s)
9.81 N
What is conservation of momentum?
If no external forces act on objects, the momentum of objects before a collision = the momentum of the objects after a collision (Newtons cradle)
