Laws of Exponents and Scientific Notations Flashcards
What is the answer of a negative number with an odd power?
It has a negative value
What is the answer of a negative number with an even power?
It has a positive value
What are the laws of exponents?
1) Product:
- Same bases different powers: a^m x a^ n = a^m+n
-Same powers different bases: a^n x b^n = (a x b)^n
2) Quotient:
- Same bases different powers: a^m / a^ n = a^m-n
-Same powers different bases: a^n / b^n = (a / b)^n
3) Power: (a^m)^n = a^mxn
What is the answer of a^0?
1
What is the answer of a^-n?
1 / a^n
What is the standard form of scientific notation?
a x 10^n
What do you do when multiplying or dividing scientific notation?
You take the numbers to one side and the 10^n to another side.
What do you do when adding or subtracting scientific notation?
You make sure that both sides have the same power.
