Laws of Exponents Flashcards
Product rule
add the exponents of terms that have the same base (in multiplying)
4^7 * 4^3 = 4^10
Product Rule
Quotient Rule
subtract the exponents when dividing
7^4 / 7^2 = 7^2 or 49
Quotient Rule
Power of power
When an exponent has a power, or when there is an exponent outside a parenthesis with its term having an exponent already, MULTIPLY the exponents
(x^2)^6=x^12
power of power
Power of product
distribute the exponents
(ab)^2=a^2b^2
power of product
power of quotient
if exponent is outside a parenthesis of a division problem, distribute the exponent in the numerator and denominator
zero exponent
all expressions raised to 0 is equal to 1
(7x+hz+97)^0=1
zero exponent
negative exponent
take the reciprocal term
m^-2 = 1/m^2
negative exponent
