Consumer Protection:
1) The sale of goods act. ‘Goods must be fit for the purpose for which they are sold. This helps receive refunds or for a business not to issue them.
2) The trade descriptions act. This forces companies to ensure every claim and statement about a product is true.
Employee Protection:
>The rights for an employee include: the right to fair pay, sick leave, maternity / paternity leave, ability to shed staff and responsibilities of those who make staff redundant.
>The working time directive is that you can’t work more than 48 hours a week you can opt out of this and work more though.
Competition Policy
>Competition and markets authority is responsible for:
-Investigating takeovers and mergers
-Investigating possible anti-competitive strategies
-Bringing criminal proceedings to anyone who commits cartel offences.
Health and Safety act:
>Designed to ensure the safety of employers and customers within a workplace
>Employers have to provide a safe environment for their staff.
Environmental Protection:
Laws put in place to govern the impact of business on the environment have increased acceptance with the need of conserving the environment
One countries legislation on environment limits its market dominance. Hard laws add costs to making products making it harder to win overseas contracts
Landfill Tax
Businesses must pay a fixed cost per tonne of waste
> This reduces waste by a business
> This also reduces international competition
