Explain the Medicines Act – 1968
What major health issues infleunced the need for the medicine health act ?
- Manufacture and supply of
- medicines
- human products
- veterinary
- Influenced by Thalidomide used for morning sickness in 1953, causing child defects.
Each medicine is assigned to one of three legal categories (Medicines Act 1968)
POM, P, GSL OR OTC.
What does POM stand for ?
– Prescription only medication
What does P stand for ?
Pharmacy
What does GSL stand for?
General sales list
What does OTC stand for ?
Over the counter
Explain the Human Medicines Regulation 2012
- Authorisation of medicinal products
- Manufacturing, import, distribution, sale and supply.
- Labelling and advertising.
- Pharmacovigilance – Monitoring of safety of medicines in clinical use.
- Does not apply to – Whole of human blood components other than plasma.
Regarding the Human Medicines Regulation 2012, what is meant by medicinal product?
- Any substance having properties preventing or treating disease in human beings
- Any substance that may be used by or administered to human beings with a view to:
a. restoring, correcting, or modifying a physiological function by exerting a pharmacological, immunological, or metabolic action or
b. making a medical diagnosis.
Explain the Misuse of drugs act 1971
- Prevents non-medical use of certain drugs
- Controls medicinal drugs and drugs with no current medicinal use.
- Drugs subject to this act are “controlled drugs:
- The law defines a series of offences, including unlawful supply. Intent to supply, export, or unlawful production.
Class A, Offences under the misuse of drugs act can include what ?
- Most Dangerous
- Possession of a controlled drug
- Possession with intent to supply to another person.
- Production, cultivation, or manufacture of controlled drugs.
- Supplying another person with a controlled drug.
- Offering to supply another person with a controlled drug.
- Allowing premises, you occupy or manage to be used to consume certain controlled medication.
- Importing or exporting controlled rugs.
- Certain controlled drugs can be obtained through a doctors prescription and In such cases us not illegal.
What is included in Class A drugs ?
Class A:
Cocaine/crack, ecstasy, heroin, LSD, methadone, methamphetamine (crystal meth), magic mushrooms containing ester of psilocin
AND
Any Class B drug which is injected.
What is included in Class B drugs ?
Class B:
Amphetamine (not methamphetamine), barbiturates, codeine, ketamine and cannabis.
All cathinone derivatives, including mephedrone, methylone, methedrone and MDPV were brought under control as Class B substances in 2010.
What is included in Class C drugs ?
Class C:
These include anabolic steroids, tramadol, minor tranquillisers, GBL and GHB, and khat.

What is the main difference between the medicine act and the misuse of the drug act ?
The Misuse of Drugs Act also prohibits unlawful possession.
