Terms that are relevant in law school.
Abate
A decrease in power.
Abduction
Stealing someone using force.
Abrogate
To cancel and or abolish a law so that is no longer in force.
Abuse of Process
Using a legal right in a way to make unfair to others.
Accused
A defendant charged with a crime.
Defendant
A person, company, or institution accused or sued in a court of law.
Acquit
To be “not guilty” charged in a criminal case.
Act of God
A natural event that no-one could see coming.
Cyclone
Tropical storm
Actus Reus
An act that can prove someone guilty of criminal offense
Adjourn
To delay a court hearing by another time or day
Adjournment without conviction
When the court does not record the conviction as long as the person sentenced does not offend again.
Aiding and abetting
Helping someone carry out a criminal offense
arrears
Money owed that must be paid back in a certain time period.
Asylum
Protection from another country to a person who was forced to leave their home.
