How do political parties influence law reform?
Parties outline proposed reforms in their manifestos. The elected government introduces laws based on its policies.
Example: Conservative-led governments introdujcing harsher sentencing laws.
Advantages of political influence
Democratic - The Public knows what laws a government intends to introduce
Efficient - A majority government can pass laws quickly
Disadavantages of Political influence.
A government with a large majority can pass controversial laws due to Parliament Act 1911
A new government can repeal or change laws introduced py previous governments, creating instability.
How does public opinion and media influence law reform?
The media plays a crucial role in influencing Parliament by exposing injustices and highlighting public concerns.
Example: The media used graphic imagery of dog attacks, which caused a public out cry and the Dangerous Dogs Act to be passed.
What role do pressure groups play in law reform?
Groups like greenpeace or liberty campaign for legal change, often representing specific causes or interests. They may use petitions, protests or legal action
Advantages of Pressure groups
Brings important issues to Parliament’s attention.
Uses expert knowledge to influence law-making
Disadvantages of Pressure groups
Not always representative of public opinion as it might only be a minority
Some use extreme tactics, such as disruptive protests, which may reduce credibility.
What is the Law Commission?
An independent body that reviews and recomends legal reforms.
Example: Led to codification efforts, such as the Sentencing Act 2020, simplifying sentencing laws.
Advantages of the law commission
Ensures well-researched, non-political legal changes
Improves clarity and fariness in the law
Disadvantages of the law commission
Parliament often ignores or delays recommendations
Governemtns resist reforms that are politically inconvenient
