Define Law
A set of rules imposed on all members of society which are officially recognised and enforced by organisations, such as the police and the courts.
Define Rule
A guideline that must be followed however it is not legally enforced. Rules have consequences.
Example = no phones at school
Define Customs
Collective habits that have developed in a society over a long period of time
Example = Having a birthday annually
Differences between rules, customers and laws
Laws are legally enforced by the state where as rules and customs are not. Rules can be set or placed on many different groups within society where as
laws are to be followed by everyone. Customs develop as a choice by habit and can be broken without legal consequences.
Ethics
Codes of conduct that decide what is wrong and what is right in a particular circumstance.
Values
Beliefs that a person holds about things and aspects of life. These are guiding principles that mould a person’s behaviour all his life.
The difference between values and ethics
values are guiding principles in life and every person
has his own value system that helps him in his behaviour and action throughout his life. On the other hand, ethics are moral codes of conduct that decide what is wrong and what is right about the
behaviour of an individual or a group in a society.
A just law
One that allows everyone to receive fair treatment and outcomes and ensures that human rights are recognised and respected. Aims to treat people fairly and impartially.
Justice
The continued effort to do the right thing by everyone. Involves consulting the people and carrying out the decision made by the majority whilst ensuring the minority are able to voice their point of view
Disenfranchisement
To be deprived of a right or privilege
Procedural fairness
The fairness in the processes that resolve disputes
Natural justice
Everyone should be treated fairly in legal situations.
Rule of Law
The concept that no one is above the law
Anarchy
The state of being without any government or authority.
Tyranny
The rule by a person that is usually achieved illegitimately. The rule is typically cruel and oppressive.
