Lava Flashcards
1
Q
Two types of lava
A
Basaltic and acid lava
2
Q
Where does basaltic lava come from
A
- Originate from upward movement of mantle material
- Most common along spreading ridges, also hotspots and developed ridge systems
3
Q
What is the nature of basaltic lava
A
- Gas bubbles have freedom to expand = fluid eruption and free flowing
4
Q
What is basaltic lava made of
A
Dominated by iron and manganese + low in silica
5
Q
What is acid lava made of
A
Rich in silica
6
Q
What is the nature of acid lava
A
Viscous = gas bubbles struggle to expand = build up of pressure and violent eruptions
7
Q
Where is acid lava eruptions found
A
Destructive margins (andesitic) and collision margins (ryalitic)
