Q

what is lattice enthalpy used to measure?

A

used as a measure of the strength of ionic bonding in a giant ionic lattice. the more negative the lattice enthalpy, the stronger the bonding.

Q

factors:ionic charge

A

the higher the charges of the ions, the stronger the electrostatic attractions between the ions so the more energy released when an ionic lattice forms.

more energy released means that the lattice enthalpy will be more negative.

Q

factors:ionic radius

A

the smaller the ionic radii of the ions involved, the higher the charge density of the ion.

this means the electrostatic attraction between the ions is greater so the lattice enthalpy is more exothermic.
