What are the Americas?
It is the land that encaptulates the people, cultures, language, traditions, and governments.
What are the countries included in Latin America?
Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic. Historically: Jamaica, Suriname, Guyana, Florida, Haiti.
What is territorial conquest?
It is the seizure of territory for the benefit of an external power.
Dependency Theory?
The extraction of goods, natural resources, and labor form a colonized territory for the
Empires?
They are nation’s controlling the political and administrative realities of acquired sovereign territories, either through military or treaties.
What is colonialism?
It is the transfer of domination onto a territory and/or people that cannot fight against the colonizers.
And administrative colonialism?
The ruling empires deploying governmental officials to manage territories. Ex- Great Britain over Jamaica.
Hybridity?
the blending of multiple properties an/or processes into something organically new.
Mestizaje?
Mixing of two distinct cultures, especially in terms of European and Indigenous cultures.
Mulataje?
Black hybrid body and biological and cultural mixing of European and African heritage.
What was the idea centering mestizaje as official racial identity?
Known as Mestizo Nationalism.
Doctrine of Discovery?
In 1493, Pope Alexander the Sixth gave Papal decree to the Spanish crown and conquistadors exclusive rights to colonize the “New World.”
